Both of these books focus upon eschatology, or ‘the study of last things’, using the traditional Advent themes of heaven, hell, judgment and death. They are welcome reflections upon themes that have long divided and confused Christians. Even the Baptist biblical fundamentalists of the 1920s famously failed to agree with each other about their ‘true’ eschatological meaning. Not least of their problems was that the Bible itself has eschatological passages that are difficult to reconcile - ranging from the shallow interest that the Hebrew Bible has in any personal survival after death to the changing expectations in the New Testament about whether the Eschaton, Advent, Second Coming, or Parousia (variously understood) is imminent or not, and what-on-earth the Petrine and credal Descent into Hell is all about. Rich theological hunting ground presenting numerous pitfalls for Advent preachers.
