Along with Noah’s Ark, Moses in the Bulrushes, and Baby Jesus in the Manger, Jonah and the Whale must surely rank as one of the best-known stories in the Bible. He’s the prophet who tries to avoid God’s call to Nineveh by stowing away on a ship heading in the opposite direction; accidentally converts the crew when they survive a storm after throwing him overboard for causing it; is improbably swallowed by a sea-monster, then finds himself coughed up in Nineveh anyway; and finally he is massively disappointed when his preaching is so successful that God fails to destroy the repentant population. No wonder Rowan Williams was once quoted in The Tablet as remarking in a lecture that the book could be described as a comedy or satire on prophecy!
