Breaking not broken: Ableism and the Church after Constantine

Timothy Goode

SCM Press, 2026, xiv + 242pp., pbk,

£30.00.

Timothy Goode, Canon for Discipleship and Nurture at York Minster and a national disability advocate, understands very deeply the impact of exclusion on account of disability. It would be pleasing if the Christian Church were a model of inclusion but, as Goode writes, ‘to live as a disabled person in the Church is to live in profound tension; between welcome and rejection, between visibility and invisibility, between being held and being held at arm’s length and – I say this with sorrow, but also with honesty – I have never experienced more discrimination than I have since being ordained’ (xiii).
