Trans Formations: Grounded Theology in Trans and Non-Binary Lives

Alex Clare-Young
SCM Press, 2024, 240pp., pbk, £25.

There is a growing need for well-rounded, carefully considered and accessible ways to theologically engage with the lives of trans and non-binary people today. Clare-Young’s doctoral research, which forms the foundation of their Trans Formations, moves the current discourse away from apologetics and towards a theology formed with and through the experience of ten trans and non-binary Christians, capturing the diversity of experience across and beyond the gender spectrum. While Clare-Young writes of their own experience in their 2019 book Transgender Christian Human, Trans Formations takes the courageous step of inviting others to contribute their story, providing a wealth of insight and opportunity for formative theological reflection. Identifying as a trans-masculine non-binary person, Clare-Young recognises and resists the notion and dangers of theological objectivity. This reflexive lens allows them to navigate and inhabit the space of researcher-participant. In doing this carefully and openly, Clare-Young articulates their experience of personal transformation and explains that the hope central to the publication of their research is that others may also embark on this journey.
