Forum: Acting on Child Poverty

Trust for London has posed the possibility that London’s areas of greatest gentrification, where house prices have risen significantly, more people rent privately, far fewer rent through Local Authorities, diversity is reduced, notably with fewer Black people, and there are fewer public amenities, could become childless communities.

Imagine the concept. Imagine the impact of a childless city. London’s schools are already closing at an alarming rate in specific postcodes. On the one hand, in London, child poverty has decreased. I served as a parish priest in Hackney over a decade ago and levels of child poverty have decreased significantly since then in many ways. This is to be welcomed, yet still 30% of children in Hackney live in poverty, one of the highest levels in London. Inequality remains stark, and its shape continues to change. The challenge remains.
