Within the first week of his papacy, the new pope identified artificial intelligence as one of the defining issues of our time. As someone with most of my working life ahead of me, and with an interest in the intersection of Christian ethics and public life, I am particularly struck by this, recognising the uncertainty of what the years ahead may bring. My current role, supporting two bishops in the House of Lords with their parliamentary work, predominantly involves writing, research and advising. These skills hitherto have been valuable and generally safe from encroachments of technology. However, with the advancement of tools such as ChatGPT and other forms of generative AI, the fast-moving pace of change raises questions about the utility of such skills in future.
