What is the purpose and value of theology today? How is it studied, taught, and deployed in ways that serve the world well – and what might ‘serving the world well’ even look like? Such existential questions confront both universities and churches as they grapple with ever-more uncertain and unstable institutional futures. This is perhaps most pronounced in the western hemisphere, where the historical power and importance of arts and humanities, faith and religion are now suspect and fading. In the UK context we might point to debates about whether theology is a worthwhile subject in an educational discourse focused on job prospects and economic success, or to ongoing conversations within the Church of England about the theological knowledge and skills required by clergy and lay leaders if the church is to survive and thrive, as symptomatic of the situation.
