(Un)Certain: A Collective Memoir of Deconstructing Faith
Olivia Jackson
SCM Press, 2023, 256pp, pbk. £19.99
Olivia Jackson’s (Un)Certain is a collective memoir of those who have deconstructed their predominately but not exclusively evangelical Christian faith. The accounts included in the memoir span 50 years and include stories from across the globe, portraying captured moments in diverse journeys of deconstruction. This breadth means that many from this cultural background can see themselves in what is being shared. It also means that some of the accounts are somewhat removed from one’s own experience and represent a different aspect of the evangelical Christian culture at a different time and/or place. I am following Jackson’s steer in using the language of the evangelical in this review as a ‘catch-all’ for the experiences she captured.
