I am a White British (though not English) Christian, with mixed Northern European heritage, and by no stretch of the imagination am I working-class. One of my parents trained and worked as a teacher, the other as a librarian and notary public. One grandfather was an academic archaeologist and university lecturer; a grandmother left her PhD programme in the 1940s to get married but continued university teaching thereafter. The men on both sides further back were naval officers, military medics, colonial civil servants, fruit farmers, magistrates, and more. I’m descended from early-nineteenth-century White settlers of South Africa, and from members of the Indian Medical Service, an offshoot of the British East India Company.
