From Coming Home to the Common Good: the housing crisis and the Church of England
More than 8.5 million people, including two million children, are suffering as a result of the housing crisis in England today. This suffering can take many different forms: from rough sleeping, or other less visible forms of homelessness, to repair problems like faulty wiring or mould which can pose a risk to residents’ health (National Housing Federation, 2021). Millions of people across the country may be living in buildings covered with the type of cladding that caused the Grenfell Tower fire to spread so catastrophically – although the use of such cladding is so common across the construction industry that exactly how many homes are covered in it is, even now, unknown (Apps, 2020). Meanwhile, overcrowding is widespread: in 2023, 310,000 children were forced to share their bed with family members because of a lack of space at home (National Housing Federation, 2023). And, on top of all this, thousands of families are simply unable to afford their rent or mortgage payments.
