A Fabergé Visionnaire Chronograph Rose Gold Watch retails for just over £43,000 on the Fabergé website.¹ There are more expensive watches labelled coyly ‘Price on Application.’ Is it right to spend so much money on a watch, let alone to make or sell one at such a price? And what about our own more modest luxury purchases, whether food, clothes, jewellery, holidays, or something else entirely? It is hard to justify spending such a large sum on a device to tell the time, when a basic watch can be had from Argos for under £10 and around the world, people lack food, warmth, and sanitation.² For many of us who have experienced poverty, or know and love people who have, the only reaction possible to Fabergé and their customers is anger and disgust.
