Melodies of a New Monasticism: Bonhoeffer’s Vision, Iona’s Witness
Craig Gardiner
SCM Press 2018, xvi+ 335 pp., pbk
Any book which claims to explore the nature of Christian community will in some areas fall short, but this published PhD thesis by Craig Gardiner can be read in several different ways, all of them fruitful. As an exploration of the ‘fertile synergy of theology and music’ it is a delight. Rather than relying on established dialectical methodologies, Gardiner opts for a ‘bisociative methodology’ which enables him to move fluidly through theological and musical metaphors, picking out the resonances and dissonances between them as he explores the nature of community.
