How do you know it’s God? The Theology and Practice of Discerning a Call to Ministry
SCM Press 2021, 272 pp., hbk
In this book, Lynn McChlery demonstrates theology at its best. She is attentive to who God has revealed Himself as in the Christian gospel, attentive to what others have to say (be they theologians, Christian practitioners, or secular scientists), and brings these various insights into conversation with one another in order to reflect on a perennially important ecclesial issue. Not only is this excellent theological practice, but this approach has another advantage: namely, embodying what McChlery attempts to achieve. Regarding the issue of vocational assessment, McChlery ponders how Vocational Assessors (VAs) can best be attentive to God’s and the applicants’ voices in the situation of discerning a call to ordained ministry.
