Culture of Despair
Black Nihilism and Spiritual Hope
I came across a talk entitled ‘Black faith’s encounter with nihilism’ by Lewis Brogdon of the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky in the USA. Towards the end he explains ‘growing the edges for the Black Christian tradition, we are going to have to give our people space to talk about, to sit with and to grapple with their pain, with meaninglessness, with hopelessness. We have to stop shutting that down and pretending that it is not real. Because, my sisters and brothers, it is’ (Brogdon).
