Churches have frequently been disputatious communities and it is telling that Tertullian’s well-known quotation, “See how these Christians love one another”, is frequently heard more as an ironic commentary on church life today than as a recognition of faithful virtue. Yet serious grappling with why this might be, and how it might be otherwise, has not been a conspicuous activity, whether within the church or the academy. Here, Christopher Landau, in the published version of his doctoral thesis, makes a sustained attempt to fill that yawning gap.
