Truth and the Church in a Secular Age
Ed. David Jasper and Jenny Wright
SCM Press, 2019, 201pp., pbk

This substantial but digestible book comprises essays by twelve members of the Scottish Episcopal Church, most of them members of its Doctrine Committee. Its theme is expressly chosen to address the issues of ‘post-truth’, but the essays almost always avoid either a polemical or a knowing tone in relation to the current social and political issues which have given rise to so much ink-spilling about the concept of truth. There is, too, a sense of another unseen dialogue partner, the ‘conservative’ doctrinal tendency which has been gradually splitting off from this denomination over the last decade: here too the tone of the essays is mature, non-polemical and largely devoted to locating a Christian concept of truth which sits within the mainstream credal tradition.
