Queer and Indecent: An Introduction to Marcella Althaus-Reid
SCM Press, 2021, 224 pp., pbk, £19.99
Thia Cooper’s remarkable new book offers an introduction to the thought of Marcella Althaus-Reid, and revives the critical lens of indecent theology. Althaus-Reid’s language is sometimes not easy to comprehend - probably because of the metaphors she uses from Latin American contexts, and also because her theology is too paradoxical to get an easy grip on her main points. Cooper’s writing is therefore very useful in clearing up elements of confusion and general misunderstanding in Althaus-Reid’s writings. Due to Cooper’s personal experience of working with Althaus-Reid for her Masters and doctoral degrees, she is able to offer her first-hand observation of how Althaus-Reid thought and what she might mean in her writings.
