Divorce or New Birth?
Living in Love and Faith and the Future of the Church of England
A few years ago, in a presentation to a group of Christian leaders, I made an effort to shift the metaphors of the Church of England’s current anguish over sexuality. Perhaps what we are currently experiencing, I mused, should be understood not in terms of marriage, as the pain of incipient divorce, but in terms of pregnancy, as the birth pains of something unexpected and new. Warming to my tune, I ventured that we might be moving to a place that none of us had anticipated or imagined – only for my enthusiasm to be punctured by a gruff voice from the audience in response: ‘a new birth, yes’, they conceded, before adding, ‘but it might be twins’.
