On the 23rd June 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a referendum which had a turnout of 72.2 percent of eligible voters, the largest turnout for a vote since 1992. The referendum result was followed by a vast outpouring of emotion: from jubilation amongst those who voted Leave, with Nigel Farage proclaiming the event as Independence Day, to anger and despair from those who voted Remain.
